I spent September and October of 2007 travelling around Central Australia. One thing that grabbed my attention each night was the intensity of the Zodiacal Light. The Zodiacal light is light that bounces off interplanetary dust lying in the plane of the solar system. A couple of hours after sunset the angle is just right that reflection off the dust is seen quite clearly on Earth as a glow in the sky It is about as bright as the lightglow from a large country town. Though I've seen it many times in the eastern states, there is always a little doubt in my mind because there is always a distant town in that direction. This photo was taken from the campground at Rainbow Valley National Park, south of Alice Springs. The nearest town in that direction is about 1500km away.
