Daintree River

70mins drive North of Cairns, Daintree is a small village on the Daintree River. This is the place to go to see crocodiles. Crocodiles live along the edge of the Daintree River. Numerous tour operators offer inexpensive boat trips from the dock in the middle of town and from docks along the road into town. The boat will take you very close to salt water crocodiles and many bird species. One tour operator pulled up to a tree and took a snake off the tree and began waving it at the terrified passengers. Had it not been for the crocs in the water, some of the clients may have jumped overboard. He neglected to tell them it was a green tree snake and quite harmless. Usually, there is no need to book but during the eclipse, there may be more visitors than usual be prepared for a wait. One funny thing happened. One night, we walked into a restaurant in the middle of towm. It was empty, people sitting at one table and at least ten tables empty. We asked for a table. The woman looked at us, looked around scratched her head and then she said it, "I'm sorry, we don't have a table." Bengt looked at me and said, " I feel like we are in a very bad movie." As a result, we drove to a restaurant at an ecolodge about 5km before the village that we highly recommend. The food was exquisite. If you go at night, bring a flashlight. We arrived there at twilight and couldn't park in the grounds so we parked on the road. Later when we returned to the car, it was so dark we couldn't see anything.
