Volcanic National Park The Undarra Lava Tubes Located 250km SW of Cairns, the Undarra Lava Tubes are a unique experience. 190, 000 years ago an enormous volcanic eruption created lava flows that travelled up to 160km in some directions. The outer circumference of the lava flow cooled and solidified. The lava in the cores remained molten and continued to flow until it drained out leaving hollow tubes. Eventually, erosion, tree roots weaked the roof in places and the roof collapsed exposing the tubes. Guided tours only.
Best done as an overnight or two night trip. Basic accommodation available at Undarra. Motel available at Mt Surprise.
