Macro lenses

There are a number of ways to get 1:1 macro ratios with your camera gear. You can buy a 50mm macro lens or put extension tubes on your existing 50mm standard lens. The problem with these techniques is that the working distance is very short. I purchased a Nikon 4T filter. It is a high quality 2 element closeup filter. Using this on my 120mm or 200mm lens with extension tubes, I'm able to get a close up magnification of 1:1 and get some working distance to boot. This means a flat field is easier to focus on because the difference in distance to the corners and the centre is less than a macro lens where I am working at 50mm working distance.

This has advantages in several areas not the least of which is that when photographing butterflies or insects, I can stay further away.
