Surges

Water surges are reaveal hutter speeds between 1/15 and 1/2 sec. Of course your timing has to be right. You have to anticipate the surge and press the shutter just as it starts.

Blurring the water

When the shutter speed is longer than 1/2 second the water begins to blur eventually turning to an amorphous cotton wool like appearance.  I took this image from a sand dune above the coastline at Mimosa Rocks NP with a 120mm f2.8 lens @ f2.8 using a red filter. The exposure was around 1 second on Agfa APX 25 film.

Portraits

Focus on the eyes at f5.6-f8 when taking portraits.

Use soft reflected light when possible.

Throw background right out of focus if the portrait is about the faces. Throw it a little out of focus if the portrait is about the person and their environment

Bolivian children, 400mm lens, f5.6, 1/250 sec
